Learning To Fly

Whether you are interested in learning to fly as a career, for your business, or just for the fun of it, Speedbird Aviation can help you down the path to your Pilot’s License.

Ask any pilot and they will tell you that learning to fly was the most rewarding experience of their life, but most people are surprised when they find out just how easy the process can be.

To become certified by the FAA as a Private Pilot you will need at least 40 hours* of flight time, 20 with a Certificated Flight Instructor and 20 flying Solo.   In addition to learning how to operate the aircraft safely throughout its performance envelope, you will learn about aerodynamics, weather, aviation regulations, navigation, and flight planning.  You will also take a multiple-choice FAA test and pass a very basic medical examination.

When you have met the FAA requirements and your Instructor is confident that you are able to safely meet the standards of a Private Pilot you will take a Flight Test, or Checkride with an examiner who is a highly experienced Instructor authorized by the FAA to issue Pilot Certificates.

Once you receive your license you can truly begin to enjoy the freedom of aviation. You can take family and friends flying, whether you are just showing them their house from 1,000 feet, or heading out of town for a weekend at the coast.  You can also begin learning to fly more advanced aircraft or how to fly in clouds to make your trips safer and give yourself more flexibility when traveling.

We hope that this information package will help you take that first step to a whole new perspective on the world!

  • Forty hours is the FAA minimum for a Private Pilot’s License.  Most people take more time, with 55 hours being a current national average.

Why Speedbird Aviation?

“What are the advantages of learning to fly at Speedbird Aviation?” you may ask…

  • Experienced Instructors with thousands of hours of Military and Airline flight experience.  Compare us to other Flight Schools where the instructors are building flight hours to move on to “better” jobs.
  • Modern equipment.  Our training aircraft are equipped with modern navigation and communication equipment, including GPS with map displays and terrain awareness for even greater safety.
  • Modern facility.  Our facility is patterned after those at larger airports catering to $20 million business aircraft, meaning you will be learning in a comfortable, professional environment with state of the art computerized learning tools.
  • Advanced training options.  Once you have your Private Pilot’s License then you can begin working on your Instrument Rating to fly in poor weather condition, your Seaplane Rating in our classic Cessna 180 Amphibian, or take an Advanced Avionics Checkout in our new C-172!
  • Our Pilot Community.  We have a strong and supportive Pilot Community, so that even on those days when you cant fly due to weather, you will learn a great deal from “Hangar Flying” with the “locals”.  Whether you are talking to a fellow Student Pilot or a 10,000 hour airline veteran, you will learn something and feel a part of something very special.

But I Have A Question…

  • I wear glasses, can I still learn to fly?  YES!  Many pilots wear glasses or contact lenses.  As long as your vision is corrected to 20/30 you can usually pass your FAA Medical Exam, even with some color blindness.
  • How much will it cost?  For a  person who learns to fly in the FAA minimum of 40 hours the cost will be approximately $5500..  We offer a discount for customers who keep at least $1000 on account with us.
  • How long does it take?  This all depends on how frequently you are able to take a lesson.  For someone able to fly several times a week and devote extra time to studying, a Private Pilot’s License can take less than a month.  A typical student flying once a week can expect to take around six months.  There is no set time requirement to complete your training, it is all up to your schedule.
  • Will I have to buy an airplane once I get my LicenseNot at all.  Our airplanes are available for rent, whether you just want to take a friend for a 30-minute ride or take the family to Florida for a week, you are welcome to rent our aircraft.  (However, if you do want to buy your own aircraft our experienced staff can help you navigate the process.)
  • Is it safe?  Absolutely!  In spite of what the evening news would have you believe, aviation has an outstanding safety record.  Our aircraft are meticulously maintained in accordance with prescribed FAA standards, our Instructors are highly experienced, and all of our operations are conducted with SAFETY as the number one concern.
  • I heard that there is a lot of math involved.  Is this true?  I hate math!  No.  There is a common misconception that pilots must also be Rocket Scientists.  The math skills you use in day-to-day life will get you through Pilot Training with very little difficulty.
  • What if I get airsick?  Very, very few people have problems with motion sickness when learning to fly.  Our instructors know the proper techniques to avoid motion sickness, and if you do feel a little uncomfortable you can end your lesson at any time.  (The few people who do experience a problem usually get over it within a few lessons.)
